Ready or not Three mantras for every job search
Ready or not Three mantras for every job searchReady or not Three mantras for every job searchBefore you attend that networking event or go searching for the latest in resumeadvice, take a moment, take a breath, and read these three items1. You have a new job.Consider your job search a new job all on its own. If youre currently employed, best practices say you should spend 15-20 hours a week on your job search. Unemployed? You need to dedicate 35-40 hours a week. In this market, you need to be committed to your search. If your time is limited, make sure youre focusing on the activities that will be most effective for your search.2. Everyone has a bad day.Having a bad day isnt nearly as bad if you have a plan for the day after. When you hit a speed bump and you will dont let it derail you. Instead, redouble your efforts for the next days hunt. Do everything you can to maintain momentum. Remember, its how you perform when things dont work out that defines you.3. Give yourself a gold star. Each week, take a moment to recognize the successes youve had with your job search, no matter how small they seem. The job search is a long process and there are many milestones along the way to that coveted job offer. Celebrating them can give you the confidence and momentum you need to get you there.Did you read those? Great Now go back and read them again, aloud if possible. Commit them to memory if you can. Youre going to find yourself coming back to them repeatedly throughout the course of your search. The search can be a difficult and lonely place, but only if you let it. Remind yourself that overnight success in the job search is not only unlikely, its almost completely impossible.

Lady Boss is the perfect anthem for every millennial boss who wants to be liked
Lady Boss is the perfect anthem for every millennial boss who wants to be likedLady Boss is the perfect anthem for every millennial boss who wants to be likedRachel Bloom, creator of Golden-Globe-winning Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, has given us musical numbers on how to give good parent and realizing yourethe villain in your own story. And now in partnership with Vanity Fair, shes also tackling the anxiety of being a ladybossin a new music video. Through the laughs about Bloom wondering how much boob is too much boob to expose to your co-workers, she is also making pointed social commentary about the common tightrope for young female bosses wanting to be respected while also wanting to be liked.I want you to do what I want /But let me say it in a nice way /All right, I shouldnt care if you think Im nice /Do you think Im a b- -? Well, I dont give a s- But if I do give a s- , is that internalized misogyny?/Is it?Truths in the laughsBloom is playing up anxiety that research has shown is well-j ustified. Harvard Business Review research says that female bosses are penalized by their employees if they dont demonstrate traditionally feminineskills like empathy, support, sensitivity, and self-disclosure.The rub is that male bosses arent seen any worse if they dont show these empathetic qualities. But for women, it matters.Blooms song also tackles female-to-female dynamics in the workplace. After Bloom asks a coworker what her problem is, and Taylor admits she thinks your success means my failure. Theres a persistent Queen Bee myth - thoroughly debunked - that women are inherently catty and wont support one anotlageher.Adam Grant and Sheryl Sandberg break down the mythin their New York Times column. They found that when a woman became a CEO, women below in her rank would have a better chance of joining senior management.Studies show that women worry about how theyre perceivedin male-dominatedoffice settings, with reason. Perceptions of behavior are very different for men and women. As Grant and Sandberg noted When female executivespromoted diversity in the workplace, they received lower performance ratings because they were seen as trying to game the system.Yet when a male executive would do the same push for diversity, he was rewarded for it with higher performance ratings.Thats why Grant and Sandberg found that when women fear that their group isnt valued, some members will distance themselves from their own kind. But in this song, theres a happy ending. After hashing out their differences through song, Bloom and Taylor come to an understanding.Overall, Ladyboss is a hilariously true look into the mind of being a young female boss who wants to please others while accomplishing her own goals. But there is a limit to wanting to be liked no matter what doubts Bloom admits she has about leading a team in her power ballad, she does not want to hear her colleague Derricks useful thoughts about this.

Wildlife Veterinarian Job Profile
Wildlife Veterinarian Job ProfileWildlife Veterinarian Job ProfileWildlife veterinarians are medical practitioners who specialize in treating many different types of wildlife including birds, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. These licensed animal health professionals are trained to treat mammals, birds, and reptiles. They may work either in a veterinary office setting or in the field. Duties of a Wildlife Veterinarian The typical duties of a wildlife vet may include sedating animals for procedures, performing exams, giving vaccinations, taking blood samples, administering fluids, performing surgeries when needed, prescribing medications, evaluating and treating wounds, taking x-rays and ultrasounds, cleaning teeth, assisting with captive breeding programs and providing intensive care for very young animals abandoned by their parents. Wildlife veterinarians often work in conjunction with wildlife rehabilitators at a rehabilitation facility. They also must be able to interact and communicate effectively with veterinary technicians, wildlife officials, and members of the public. It is not unusual for vets to work some nights, weekends, and holidays. Some wildlife veterinarians have schedules that involve on call time for treating emergency cases, and it is not uncommon for vets to put in 50 hours of work (or more) per week. Some wildlife veterinarians conduct research or treat patients in the field, so travel may be involved for some practitioners. Career Options for Wildlife Veterinarians Vets may work primarily as small animal, equine, or large animal vets and combine that career path with wildlife work. Some wildlife vets choose to work exclusively with exotic animals or native wildlife species. These vets may find work in veterinary pharmaceutical sales, the military, government organizations, research facilities or labs, wildlife rehabilitation centers, zoological parks, museums, aquariums, or academic institutions as professors or biology teachers educating wildlife interns. Education and Training All wildlife veterinarians graduate with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, which is achieved after completing a demanding course of study which covers both small and large animal species. The Tufts University veterinary program is well known for its Wildlife Medicine Program. The Tufts Wildlife Clinic affords veterinary students the opportunity to work with over 1,600 native species patients each year. These animals are brought in for treatment by fish and game wardens, local rehabilitators, and members of the public. The University of California at Davis also offers access to its Wildlife Health Center as part of its veterinary medicine program. Veterinary educational options involving wildlife are plentiful at UC Davis. Options include a DVM degree with an emphasis in wildlife health, a 2-year post-DVM Masters degree focused on wildlife health and epidemiology, and a post-DVM residency in zoo medicine and pathology . After graduation, aspiring vets must pass the North American Veterinary Licensing Exam (NAVLE) to become eligible to be professionally licensed to practice. Professional Associations The American Veterinary Medical Association is one of the most prominent veterinary organizations, representing over 100,000 practitioners. The vast majority of practicing U.S. veterinarians maintain a membership with the AVMA. The European Association of Zoo and Wildlife Veterinarians (EAZW) is a well known international wildlife association that publishes professional papers and hosts scientific meetings each year to promote advances in the field of wildlife health. Veterinarians who are board certified in a particular specialty area (eg, ophthalmology, oncology, surgery, etc.) can expect to pull in higher salaries due to their extensive experience and education.

How To Leave Your Job On A High Note
How To Leave Your Job On A High Note How To Leave Your Job On A High NotePosted September 8, 2016, by Zahra Campbell-Avenell So youve aced your interview, negotiated your salary and accepted a shiny new job. Congratulations After you hand in your resignation, chances are that you have one foot well and truly out the door, pointed towards bigger and better things. While you serve out your elendice period, it can be tempting to switch to autopilot, chuck a few well-timed sickies, or even go down in a blaze of glory, la former flight attendant Steven Slater (feel free to Google that. Ill wait). But remaining gracious, competent and unflappably positive in your last weeks of employment no matter the circumstances of your departure will ensure that youre remembered as the consummate professional that you are. You might think that since youve already done the hard yards during your tenure, youre finally off the hook and can coast through your final few weeks of employment. Actua lly, not so much. Due to something called the peak-end bias, we tend not to remember experiences holistically rather we focus on their peaks and the ending. So by putting in the hard work during your last few weeks, youre far more likely to be remembered for your positive contributions. Although its nave to think that youre irreplaceable, in an ideal world youll want your employer to be sorry that they couldnt keep you, acknowledge your contributions and admit that theyll have big shoes to fill when youre gone. Heres how to do just that 1. Get your ducks in a row Before you hand in your well-crafted resignation letter, you should save any documents that you might need in the future, including presentations, projects or performance reviews (unless these are confidential, of course). Clean up your webbrowser history, remove any personal files, and make a note of any login details that you will need to pass on. 2. Dont slack off Do your very best until the last day, so you can leave the same way you came in on a high note. Your notice period is not the time to catch up on your online shopping instead, focus on completing whatever projects you have assigned to you. Any tasks that you leave unfinished (or worse, botched) will jeopardise your chances of getting a glowing recommendation and tarnish the reputation and personal brand that you might have spent years cultivating. 3. Plan the transition Even if you dont have a replacement to train, prepare detailed handover instructions so that your replacement has an easier time transitioning into your role. (Theres nothing that will destroy your reputation faster than a successor who complains incessantly about how youve left them in the lurch.) Create a quick reference guide with all your daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly tasks, and delegate any outstanding tasks with deadlines after your notice period. Share this with your manager it will take you all of 20 minutes but they will be very grateful. 4. Dont burn bridges As much as youd like to exit with a bang, its important to leave on good terms. This is not a good time to let loose about how much you really hate your boss, or how annoying youve always found those quarterly reports. Focus on tying up any loose ends to reduce the amount of follow-up required after you leave. Also, dont act too excited about your new job its not classy. In the best-case scenario, it will make people envious (but also resentful), and in the worst-case scenario, it will sound like gloating. 5. Take the high road Resist the urge to badmouth your boss, clients or colleagues, even if you think that sharing the truth will vindicate your departure. As soon as you resign, you may notice a weird us vs. them mentality developing as people departure to distance themselves from you. During this time, word has a way of getting around faster than normal and even your fruchtwein trusted confidantes can quote what you tell them in confidence in order to show the company where their loyalty lies. Feel free to air your grievances with your close friends and family but keep it strictly profesh at work. 6. Say thank you No matter how bad your job was, theres always something to be grateful for (if only the fact that you now know what you dont like or wont stand for). Express your sincere gratitude for your experience nothing will make you stand out more. Acknowledge any opportunities that youve been given to learn and grow, and express your appreciation for your boss and coworkers support. If you cant think of anything positive to say, youre better off saying something general like Thanks for the experience than risking sounding bitter. After all, actions speak louder than words, and youre voting with your feet by resigning. 7. Ask for feedback It can be tough to give developmental feedback, particularly to people who dont want to receive it. But when youve already resigned, it lowers the barrier a little bit for people who might be uncomfortable wit h giving feedback. This is a great chance to ask your manager and trusted colleagues for their honest opinion about what you could have done better. If you present it as something youre doing for your personal development, rather than an accusation, youre more likely to get an honest answer. 8. Network If you dont already have fruchtwein of your work contacts on LinkedIn, add them now. Its a professional and widely acceptable way of keeping in touch with people you may not necessarily connect with on a personal level, instead of saying something awkward like Lets do lunch sometime Take this opportunity to reach out to clients and coworkers that you dont have regular contact with and let them know youre leaving, along with your appreciation for their support and an invitation to add you on LinkedIn. Youve spent time building and cementing these relationships, so they should form the cornerstone of your professional network (and get you closer to that coveted 500+ connections status o n LinkedIn). 9. Ask for a recommendation While everyone still remembers you and can see what a great job youre doing even as youre leaving, make sure that you ask for a recommendation and/or LinkedIn endorsement. Its a good idea to email potential referees a list of bulleted accomplishments along with your start and end dates, so they remember what to focus on if they are called by a future employer. Its also nice to get a recommendation in writing on the company letterhead, if your referee is willing to do that for you. 10. Be gracious in your exit interview Many companies will ask you to participate in an exit interview to understand your reasons for leaving. This is usually conducted with HR and not your direct manager, so it can be tempting to let loose and drop a few bombshells. Dont do it In most cases, the information you provide will not be treated as confidential, and it could sour an otherwise positive impression. Bringing up past issues is potentially damaging and can s eem immature after all, its a small world and what you say can come back to bite you. Instead, focus on your personal motivations for leaving, such as career progression and opportunities for growth. 11. Leave a present If appropriate, you might want to leave a small present for your coworkers to remember you by. The more personal, the better for instance, if youre known for your home-baked cookies, consider buying a cookie jar for the schreibstube (full of your famous cookies of course). A small present for the whole office (such as a plant) can seem like a good idea but wont have the desired effect since it isnt particularly memorable. The best present Ive seen was one given to the office by my predecessor she had left her colleagues a picnic blanket to enjoy on the grassy knoll outside the office. What a great present every time people use it, they think of her. How lovely to be thought of every time its a gorgeous sunny day 12. Say goodbye Depending on your situation, your de parture could be exciting, sad or (in most cases) somewhat bittersweet. In your final week, make time to schedule any final lunches and write personalised emails to coworkers and clients, and consider giving your boss a handwritten thank you card. Send out a final email to the office (if appropriate) expressing your appreciation for the experience youve had. Finally, clean out your workspace and leave with your head held high. Leaving on a high note can be the difference between a good reference or good riddance. Make sure that you depart with dignity, professionalism and poise to leave your hard-earned reputation intact.
